phancy.com rating:

phancy.com notes: So much fun! A romcom-slasher movie, and not in a mocking way. Though it plays with the tropes, it is an earnest romcom mashed up with an earnest slasher movie. It's also very funny. The cast is delightful, the kills are brutal, fake Seattle is hilariously NOT real Seattle (they have vineyards and a tiny a airport with palm trees!) Watch with a friend!

"Heart Eyes" is a raving good time. As a Valentine's Day flick and a horror picture, it lands for fans of all kinds: those who seek warmth, wrath, or both. Valentine's Day is one of those polarizing holidays that people either embrace or dismiss as a Hallmark Holiday. Whichever side of the spectrum you land on, "Heart Eyes" has you covered, providing enough cynicism and romance to paint a pretty full picture of the peaks and valleys of the romantic experience.

Grade: C+ - Holiday slasher Heart Eyes is as slick and disposable as a store-bought card

The plot blends the romance and the horror nicely, feeding an amusingly sick and sometimes bawdy sense of humor. Bickering about who left who behind to die ignites a spark between our leads, and Brewster's horny single homicide detective flirts with a suspect across the interrogation table. But the thing that really ties the film's disparate elements together is their shared sense of heightened unreality, which brings us back to the slipperiness that makes Heart Eyes so evasive.
